The Heart of Los Lunas

Los Lunas Elementary front entrance

Los Lunas Elementary is one of ten elementaries in the Los Lunas Schools District. Located just west of the Rio Grande, it truly sits at the heart of the city. The school was designed by architect John Friedman (A.I.A.) and constructed by K.L. House Construction Co. in 1993. The superintendent of Los Lunas Schools for the dedication of LLE was Charles L. Tafoya. He was joined by the school board consisting of Mark Edwards, Rudolph Archuleta, David R. Gurule, and Fred Luna in dedicating the site. The very first principal of Los Lunas Elementary was Ms. Mary Jo Roch. She served LLE until 1994 when Mr. J.A. Sedillos took over the reins.  During his tenure, the song “This Is LLE” was adopted as the school’s “fight song.”  Several other wonderful leaders have served the students of this campus in its 31 years of existence.

When LLE was first conceived, the students were housed at the “blue school” temporarily while construction finished. When LLE students were first able to populate the official campus, they accommodated Kinder through 4th Grade.  In 2004, an addition of 8 classrooms was built on the campus. Los Lunas Elementary then brought in 5th and 6th Grade students during the 2008-2009 school year when the district ended the intermediate school model. With so much student growth, a gym was needed to house PE classes.  In 2010, the gym was completed.

The compound is over 20 acres in size, which includes the Teacher Resource Center that was constructed in 2002. The TRC allows staff from all over the district to hold meetings, presentations, and a work center for teachers, truly making the LLE campus the “Heart of Los Lunas.”

In March of 2019, a time-capsule was unearthed at LLE earmarking a 25-year anniversary. Notes, drawings, and even a video tape of the school’s groundbreaking were amongst the artifacts preserved in the time-capsule.  Another time-capsule was created for the next generation of LLE Tigers to open in the year 2044.

LLE currently has more than 470 students in Grades PreK-6, and 60 full time staff members.Within the PreK program LLE boast a three-year old (3Y) NM PreK program, Developmentally Delayed (DD) PreK Program, and a four-year old (4Y) NM PreK program.
